Story of Dedication, Courage and Hope
Gennadiy Rozhko, 42, hails from the beautiful city of Odesa. A devoted family man, he cherished quiet moments with his wife and sons, enjoyed fishing, and had a passion for car mechanics. But when war came to his homeland, Gennadiy’s life took a dramatic turn.
Before the conflict escalated, Gennadiy was a third mechanic in the merchant marine, known for his camaraderie and good spirit among the crew. He had ambitions to advance his career by joining the Kherson State Maritime Academy after completing his latest voyage. However, when the full-scale invasion began, he chose a different path. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Gennadiy sold his possessions to buy essential military gear and joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in May 2022.
Gennadiy was assigned to the 122nd Brigade and later served with the 124th Brigade as a sapper driver, carrying out critical missions in some of the most dangerous zones, including Big Potemkin Island, Antonivka, and the Genichesk Iron Bridge. His unwavering bravery and commitment earned him the medal “Unbreakable to the Heroes of the Russian-Ukrainian War” and the Order “For Loyalty to the People of Ukraine,” reflecting his extraordinary dedication to his country.
However, Gennadiy’s courage came at a high price. On January 19, 2024, during a mine-clearing operation in the Kherson region, an explosion left him with life-changing injuries, including the loss of his limbs, multiple fractures, and an eye injury.
Refusing to give in to despair, Gennadiy underwent treatment in several hospitals across Ukraine. His determination caught the eye of Dr. Vasyl Rybak, who offered him a rigorous rehabilitation program in Odesa. With unyielding perseverance, Gennadiy embraced this challenging journey, gradually rebuilding his strength and spirit.
Now awaiting new prosthetic limbs, Gennadiy has found a new purpose: supporting and mentoring other wounded soldiers. He shares his story, offering strength and encouragement to those facing their own battles for recovery. His indomitable will has made him a symbol of resilience and hope, proving that even in the face of overwhelming hardship, one can find a way forward.
