Unicef's Response to the Tragedy at Okhmatdyt Hospital
On the morning of July 8, 2024, Kyiv was shaken by a series of missile attacks that caused widespread destruction across the city. Among the hardest-hit areas was the Okhmatdyt Hospital, Ukraine's largest children's hospital, which has long been a sanctuary for children battling cancer and other severe illnesses.
The attack on Okhmatdyt was catastrophic. The hospital's buildings, including critical wards for oncology and dialysis patients, were heavily damaged. Medical staff, faced with the immediate threat, were forced to evacuate children receiving chemotherapy, even as explosions continued around them. It was a scene of chaos and heroism, as doctors, nurses, and volunteers worked tirelessly to move vulnerable patients to safety.
In the aftermath of the attack, Unicef, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), was among the first to respond. Representatives from Unicef, including Munir Mamadzade, arrived at the hospital to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance. Unicef has since been supplying the hospital with essential items, such as drinking water, hygiene products, and psychological support services to help the children and staff cope with the trauma of the attack.
This tragic event is a stark reminder of the ongoing impact of the conflict in Ukraine, particularly on the most vulnerable—its children. Unicef and WHO are committed to staying on the ground, providing life-saving support, and ensuring that these children have a chance to heal and recover.
